Deivson Rocha Dantas, 13, had been playing with his friends at the tourist hotspot Praia Del Chifre beach, in Olinda, Brazil, when a shark appeared out of nowhere.
13-year-old Deivson Rocha Dantas bled to death after being bitten by a shark at a popular beach
The child was attacked from behind, sustaining severe injuries, witnesses said.
The shark took a bite of his right thigh, causing the teen to bleed out.
He was pulled from the water by a man, who tried to resuscitate him, with no success.
The boy was rushed to hospital, but tragically died on the way.
Deivson was already dead when he arrived at Tricentenário Hospital, and had lost a lot of blood, doctors said.
The beach is notorious for vicious shark attacks, with the state recording 82 incidents 1992.
A huge 27 of those attacks were fatal, and local reports said that signs at the beach warn against swimming.
Dr Levy Dalton, who treated the boy, called the death a “tragedy”.
He said: “He had a fairly extensive injury, in an arterial area in his lower limb, and because the injury was so extensive, he probably lost a lot of blood. And that’s what led to his death.
“He arrived at the unit already deceased.
“The entire team was ready when he arrived here. We took all possible measures according to advanced life support.
“But, unfortunately, we couldn’t resuscitate him.
“It was a tragedy, and we, the hospital team, extend our condolences to his family and friends, but unfortunately, we couldn’t do much for him.”
