Highway 400 closed between Highway 401 and Finch Avenue due to fire at aluminum plant

OPP and Toronto Fire say a portion of Highway 400 is closed, both northbound and southbound, following a fire at an aluminum plant that is causing a “cloud of toxic smoke.”

The highway is closed between Highway 401 and Finch Avenue.

Calls for a fire at the plant on Gail Grove, near Sheppard Avenue West and Highway 400, came in at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday.

A Toronto fire spokesperson said crews are reacting as if it’s a chemical spill. An orange-coloured cloud of toxic smoke was seen coming from the building.

The spokesperson said water cannot be used on it as it will cause a reaction.

A number of buildings are being evacuated. No injuries have been reported.
