Comedian Hasan Minhaj was this close to having the opportunity to devastate some Washington DC insiders with his caustic wit until the 2020 White House Correspondents Dinner at which he was scheduled to be a featured entertainer was canceled due to COVID19. However, Hasan made up for it by calling Dax Shepard almost ugly while strapped up to a lie detector for a Vanity Fair interview from last year that recently went viral on Twitter. I’ll just say this — no lie was detected.

Hasan wasn’t being mean just to be mean, but when the interviewer passed him a picture of Dax and asked him to rate his looks on a scale from 1-10, Hasan didn’t take the opportunity to follow Keke Palmer’s lead and simply say “sorry to this man.” Instead, he squirmed a bit and rated Dax a generous 6.57, even though Dax had previously rated Hasan a 9/10 on his Armchair Expert podcast. But Hasan used that as a jumping off point to discuss a double standard in Hollywood wherein there is spaced carved out for average looking white dudes, but men of color have to be hot to succeed. According to Newsweek:

The video is titled “Hasan Minhaj Takes a Lie Detector Test” and shows the 35-year-old being quizzed over he would rate Shephard’s looks out of 10.

Shephard had previously rated Minhaj a nine on his podcast “Armchair Expert.”

After being told his rating was “harsh” Minhaj explained his reasoning, and it is to do with how beauty standards for men of color are higher than for white men in Hollywood.

“Okay Dax is part of a thing where, in show business, there’s this whole movement of approachable white dudes, whereas like, with men of color, it’s like Idris Elba, Henry Golding, Zayn Malik or—you work in IT,” he explained. “There is no middle.”

“You know how there’s a whole class of white dudes, like just schlubby white dues who went to high school with me but now made it in showbiz? There’s no that [for men of color.]”

This video is a year old but Kumail Nanjiani’s ascension from the IT basement on Silicone Valley to Marvel superherodom after he started eating nothing but hard-boiled eggs and Christmas hams (that’s how getting buff works, right? You just eat foods that poke out in all the right places), dovetails quite nicely into his theory. Here’s the clip that’s doing numbers on Twitter today. You can watch the entire interview here.

For science reasons only, I tried to find the picture of Daniel Dae Kim‘s pencil holders, but like many others, was unsuccessful. But I did find this one of him masked up and donating his plasma after he recovered from COVID19, which is even sexier.

10/10!
