A “Cruella” Sequel Is Already In The Works

Disney’s villain origin story, Cruella, has brought in tons of money (for these quarantine times) and got mostly good reviews–specifically Emma Stone and Emma Thompson who have been commended for their performances as over-dramatic evil fashion bitches. And the villainy of Cruella De Vil is going to be coming back at you once more, as The Hollywood Reporter confirms a second film has already been greenlit by the studio and is in early development. Sorry Joker fanboys, this means Cruella is officially more culturally relevant than you.

Cruella came out on Disney+ (for an extra $30) and in theaters on May 28. Even though the pandemic is still happening, it’s managed to rake in $87 million globally to date. For comparison, Wonder Woman 84 made $85 million worldwide in its opening weekend alone. So people aren’t exactly losing their minds over Cruella, but I guess enough so that Disney is ready to crank out another. Sequels nobody needs to movies nobody really asked for? And people thought Hollywood wouldn’t bounce back from the pandemic!

THR says that the director of Cruella, Craig Gillespie, and the screenwriter, Tony McNamara, are both expected to be coming back for a sequel. A Disney spokesperson said how tickled they were with the first one–AKA, how much they loved cashing in those $30 charges to sit in your own fucking home and watch a movie on a service you already pay for monthly. Huge success!

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date. The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

I hope at the next movie’s premiere Emma Stone wears an actually good outfit. And I didn’t watch the movie yet and don’t want to spoil it to find out if it would make sense for Emma Thompson to be in the next one but hopefully, if she is they can accommodate her underwear needs the next time around. But most importantly, I hope the sequel brings more theater brawls.
