The Taraba State House of Assembly has approved the first reading of a bill proposing the establishment of the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Change Action.
The bill, jointly sponsored by three lawmakers from Sardauna local government council of the state, seeks to create a specialized institution focused on tropical agriculture and climate action.
The members behind the bill include the former Speaker of the House, who is also the incumbent member representing Mbamnga constituency, Abel Peter Diah.
Others are the member representing Nguroje constituency, Nelson C. Len, and Abdulazeez S. TItong.
The proposed university, according to the members, is aimed at harnessing the region’s rich agricultural potential, promoting sustainable development, and offering increased educational and economic opportunities for local residents.
The lawmakers described the site as strategically chosen due to its favorable climate, fertile land and capacity to support agricultural innovation.
The approval of the bill’s first reading, as observed by our reporter, was met with enthusiasm, particularly in Sardauna council where community leaders and residents have long advocated for increased educational infrastructure.
Resident of the council who spoke with our reporter, said they see the proposed university as a vital investment in both human capital and regional development.
If the bill progresses through subsequent legislative stages and becomes law, the new institution is expected to drive agricultural advancement, attract investment, and stimulate job creation, further boosting Taraba State’s efforts to address climate challenges while enhancing food security.
