The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to resettling Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state back to their ancestral lands.
This announcement was made on Monday by James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), during the distribution of food and essential non-food items to displaced individuals.
He was represented by Donald Komgbenda, the Head of Administration, who emphasized the state's desire for peace to facilitate the safe return of displaced populations to their original homes.
Iorpuu noted that this initiative represents another significant step in Governor Alia’s commitment to providing hope, relief, and dignity to displaced individuals.
He remarked, “Through this intervention, food and essential non-food items will be distributed across 15 designated IDP camps. In addition to addressing immediate needs, Governor Alia’s administration is implementing deliberate and strategic measures to restore livelihoods and rebuild communities.”
He further mentioned that, in partnership with various organizations, the agency has begun the biometric review and issuance of new identity cards to IDPs in camps and host communities to ensure proper documentation and inclusion.
He stated: “Through our collaboration with the UNHCR, solar-powered boreholes have been installed in returnee communities such as Tatyough in Makurdi Local Government Area, where food and non-food items were also provided to support families in rebuilding their lives.
“Similarly, in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), we have initiated housing and water projects at Naka Dam, including the construction of a water treatment facility aimed at addressing the ongoing issue of water scarcity in the Naka IDP Camp and surrounding host communities.”
He took the opportunity to express gratitude to all international and local partners, as well as sister ministries, departments, and agencies, for their ongoing collaboration.
“Your support aligns perfectly with our durable solutions plan for IDPs and is essential to the success of our humanitarian response,” the SEMA leader stated.
Among the items distributed were 2,300 bags of 25kg rice, 600 bags of beans, 1,600 cartons of noodles, 150 jars of palm oil, 140 cartons of Maggi cubes, and 160 jars of groundnut oil.
