BEN STOKES has joined Joe Root in slamming Headingley’s Ashes snub and branded the decision “shambolic.”

Former captain Stokes is angry that the famous old ground in Leeds will not stage another Test match until 2029.

That despite England winning their last seven Tests at Headingley and the venue producing some of the most memorable Tests of all time.

After England’s victory by an innings and 103 runs over Pakistan on Friday, Root insisted it was a “shame” his home ground is not hosting the Aussies in 2027.

Posting a screenshot of Root’s words, Stokes added his own thoughts declaring: “Shame is an understatement tbh!!

“Shambolic would be more appropriate. Great win though.”

Stokes’ match-winning innings of 135 not out against Australia at Headingley in 2019 is one of the greatest Test knocks of all time.

He and – who scored just one – put on 76 unbroken runs for the last wicket.

Stokes is currently playing for Durham and, at the moment at least, insists he will not be persuaded back for next summer’s Ashes.

Trent Bridge is the most northerly Test in 2027 and Stokes has previously stated: “I’m a bit devastated that there won’t be any Ashes in 2027 in the north.

“I don’t make those calls but, if I was involved, I would have said, ‘Please keep at least one game in the north.’

“I think it’s always a loud atmosphere. You know the crowds we get in the north are very good. We get a lot of support.”

Root added: “I’d love to play as many games as possible here at Headingley. It’s a great Test match venue and a surface that provides brilliant .

“We’ve had quite a lot of success recently, so it’s a shame we don’t get to play here next year.

“But I should probably stay in my lane and understand that it’s someone else’s job to sort out.”
