As Norway were leading 1-0, the substitutions started to be rolled out in the second half.
Stale Solbakken opted to replace striker Alexander Sørloth with Fulham winger Oscar Bobb.
And the name of the former Manchester City star caught the attention of Murphy on the BBC commentary.
The nine-time capped ex-England player then shared a sad story about a former pet cat that he had called Bob.
He said: “We used to have a cat called Bob.
“He jumped in the back of a Royal Mail van and they lost him
“Quite sad really. Anyway.”
Viewers were left depressed by the seemingly random story shared by the retired midfielder.
Many took to social media to complain about their moods being brought down.
One posted: “Did I just imagine that bit of commentary by Danny Murphy or did he really just tell an anecdote about his ex cat called Bob.”
A second commented: “Riveting analysis from Danny Murphy here.”
A third wrote: “Danny Murphy just casually mentioning his cat ran away in a Royal Mail van in the middle of a World Cup knockout game.”
A fourth said: “That cat anecdote from Danny Murphy was quite something.”
Another added: “Great now I am sad thinking about Danny Murphy’s dead cat while watching this.”
