Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated that banditry in the country, particularly in the Northern region, should be understood as more than just kidnapping.
Mohammed made this remark on Monday during his appearance on Sunrise Daily, a program on Channels Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
His comments are in response to the ongoing issues of insecurity facing the nation.
“People need to recognize that banditry extends beyond kidnapping. Banditry fundamentally relates to resources,” he noted.
“I was also troubled by the fact that we held a town hall meeting in Katsina regarding banditry. We had the Ministers of Interior, Defense, and various officials present. The first thing the then governor of Katsina State, Aminu Masari, informed us was that the earliest recorded instance of banditry in Katsina State dates back to 1891.
“Therefore, anyone who believes that banditry is a recent phenomenon is mistaken. It is crucial for people to understand that banditry encompasses more than just kidnapping or cattle theft,” he added.
