The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has informed residents that a military-supported rescue and protection operation is currently in progress in Ora and nearby border towns.
Governor Adeleke also expressed his condolences to the people of Ora Igbomina following recent attacks by bandits that led to the kidnapping of Emmanuel Owolabi and the death of a community chief named Dennis.
DAILY POST previously reported that Owolabi, a retired member of the Nigerian Customs Service, was taken from his home in Ora town, located in the Ifedayo local government area of the state, on Monday evening by men speaking Hausa.
Reports indicate that Dennis was killed as the kidnappers fled into the bush.
Additionally, the Osun State Police Command, in accordance with the directives from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has dispatched tactical and Mobile Police (MOPOL) units to border communities within the state.
According to a statement from his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke provided this assurance after an emergency state security council meeting held on Wednesday evening in Osogbo.
The statement disclosed that during the meeting, the governor characterized the incident as “distressing and a significant security breach despite the preemptive measures implemented in recent months.”
He emphasized that collaborative efforts were underway to prevent additional attacks and secure the release of the abducted retired Customs officer.
“From the moment of this unfortunate incident, our security forces initiated a rescue and protection operation. The Police, Nigerian Army, and DSS operatives have been searching the affected areas for the past three days.
“A sensitive operation is in progress, and we do not want to compromise the integrity of the process,” he stated.
While expressing confidence that these measures would be effective, the governor revealed plans to bolster security operations throughout the state, noting that refurbished armored tanks would soon be deployed, along with the acquisition of additional patrol vehicles to assist security agencies.
He added that the state government is “reviewing the joint security patrol program, which will be announced at an appropriate time to further enhance the protection of lives and property.”
To prevent further security incidents and potential spillover from neighboring states, Governor Adeleke issued new operational guidelines for the Amotekun Security Service, instructing it to ensure proper coordination with the police.
He called for an operational meeting between police authorities and Amotekun leadership, emphasizing that working in isolation would no longer be acceptable and underscoring the importance of collaboration in security operations.
The governor also encouraged residents to limit late-night activities, especially during the holiday season.
“These criminals are targeting nighttime gatherings,” he added.
