The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has advised nurses to refrain from traveling to countries currently experiencing conflict in their pursuit of leaving Nigeria due to the japa syndrome.
While encouraging nursing graduates not to depart the country after finishing their programs, the Council urged them to strive to contribute to the advancement of the nation's healthcare system.
The Registrar of NMCN, Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, made this statement during the induction and oath-taking ceremony for graduating professional nurses at Elizade University. He specifically cautioned them against traveling to Russia, Ukraine, Israel, and other unstable regions.
With at least 69 nursing graduates inducted during the ceremony, the registrar, represented by a director in the Council, Dr. Olukemi Awe, stated, “Choosing to enter this noble profession is not merely a career choice; it is a calling.
“This marks the beginning of your professional journey as a nurse, allowing you the privilege to serve anywhere in the world. However, please do not leave the country (japa). Let us all take care of Nigeria. We still need you here. Do not ‘japa’ at this time.
“If you still wish to leave, please avoid going to Russia, Ukraine, or Israel. I am sincerely requesting this. We need your skills and dedication here. Do not let your achievements today mark the end of your journey.”
