Stadium officials at the Melbourne Cricket Ground held an unusual emergency press conference after their pitch was deemed a “disgrace to the game.”

The historic MCG is typically the venue for Australia's Boxing Day Test, including matches in the Ashes series.

However, the ground was only utilized for two days.

This marked the first Test series since 1912 to have multiple finishes within two days, and the first since 1888.

The ground staff, known as curators, opted to cut the pitch at 10mm instead of the standard 7mm.

This decision resulted in an ideal scenario for bowlers, with 20 wickets falling on the first day and 16 on the second as they chased down a target of 175, with no batsman scoring more than 46.

The outcome was disappointing.

It appears that Cricket Australia will bear the consequences.

The first Test held in Perth, which also ended in under two days, reportedly caused the cricketing body to miss out on approximately $5 million AUD (£2.5m).

The Melbourne Test could potentially affect their finances by as much as double that amount, totaling $10 million AUD (£5m).

Unused tickets for the remaining days will need to be refunded by the association.

Moreover, the loss of matchday revenue from the 93,000 attendees purchasing food and beverages during the holiday season, along with canceled corporate suites and hospitality, will have a significant financial impact.

There may also be commercial repercussions for broadcasters and sponsors.

In response to the pitch controversy, the MCG has decided to take action.

CEO Stuart Fox and head curator Matthew Page will hold a press conference on Sunday.

However, former England player Steve Harmison expressed his dissatisfaction with the condition of the pitch at the largest stadium in the southern hemisphere.

Harmison stated to talkSPORT : “The MCG on Boxing Day is one of the most significant events in world cricket.

“They attracted 94,000 spectators on the first two days.

“To have a pitch like that – which you wouldn’t even expect in a level five village match – is a disgrace to the sport of cricket.

“The players did not deserve that type of surface. There is a distinction between good bowling and simply allowing the pitch to dictate the game.”

‘THERE WOULD BE HELL’

“The England players can do whatever they want now – because they won’t be in the headlines tomorrow.

“It will be these two [Fox and Page] after their press conference.”

England captain Ben Stokes, who scored 16 and 2 and took four wickets in Melbourne, delivered a harsh critique of the MCG pitch, suggesting there would be “hell” to pay if a similar pitch were used elsewhere.

Stokes described the surface as “not the best” and added to BBC’s TMS: “With 36 wickets falling in less than two days and no team surpassing 200 runs, it speaks volumes.

“If this had occurred in another location, it would likely result in a major backlash.”

When asked if he was alluding to criticism of turning pitches in Asia, Stokes replied: “Those are your words, not mine.

“I’m quite certain that if this happened elsewhere in the world, there would be a significant uproar.

“This is not ideal for matches that should last five days, but we played a style of cricket that ultimately got the job done.”

Fans, however, found humor in the unfortunate situation.

One fan quipped: “I think we should start another Test on the same pitch tomorrow and give England a chance to level it 3-3 in Sydney.”

Another suggested: “As a country, we need Cricket Australia, the MCC, and the broadcasters to quickly arrange a one-day 50-over match tomorrow at the MCG featuring Ricky Ponting, Stuart Broad, and whoever else we can get for a legends match. Free admission for kids, broadcasted on TV, along with a public apology.”
