The All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims that it is becoming a refuge for politicians evading corruption investigations.
The party asserted that membership does not shield individuals from legal action.
Mustapha Salihu, the National Vice Chairman for the North-East, stated that any party member found guilty of corruption would face investigation and prosecution, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has a strict policy against corruption.
While addressing reporters in Yola on Saturday night, Salihu characterized allegations that defectors to the APC were escaping scrutiny from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a deliberate attempt to undermine the government.
“This narrative aims to tarnish President Tinubu's reputation.
“Anyone who misappropriates public funds will face prosecution, even if they join the APC. Many of our leaders have already entered plea agreements and returned stolen assets,” he remarked.
Salihu was reacting to comments made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who accused the APC of becoming “a refuge for EFCC fugitives” as the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) weakens.
In response to the allegations, Salihu challenged critics to provide evidence against any APC member suspected of corruption and encouraged them to file formal complaints.
“If anyone possesses credible information against any APC leader, they should submit it. The party will not protect anyone.
“Corruption has devastated this nation, and this administration will not accept it,” he asserted.
The APC leader also accused opposition figures of exploiting anti-corruption narratives in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, insisting that Nigerians would see through what he termed political propaganda.
He emphasized that defections to the ruling party were motivated by conviction and patriotism rather than fear of legal consequences, reiterating that the EFCC is free to fulfill its responsibilities irrespective of party affiliations.
