Anthony Albanese, a leader of the Labour Party, has won re-election as prime minister of Australia in the country’s federal election.
He defeated Peter Dutton, leader of the main opposition Liberal Party.
Albanese, delivering a victory speech to supporters, says his party won a majority in the polls.
Dutton has already conceded defeat and has congratulated Albanese.
The country’s cost-of-living and housing crises dominated the election campaign, which was also defined by recent uncertainty caused by United States President Donald Trump‘s policies.
Recall that Australians began voting on April 22, with more than 8.5 million of the 18 million voters already casting early ballotsâa considerable jump from the 2022 election. Voting is compulsory in the country.
