The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, Mrs Eduma Essien, has expressed reservations over the declining status of the statistics profession in Nigeria due to the activities of quacks and unqualified individuals in the field.

She called on the government to create strong legislation to protect the practice in the country.

Mrs Essien, who is also a statistician, made this statement while receiving the Head of Department and staff of the Department of Statistics in her office on Monday.

While regretting that many unqualified individuals are now working as statisticians, Essien appealed that only people with the right training and certification should be allowed to practise statistics in Nigeria.

In her words, “Statistics has many branches, which makes it a valuable and marketable profession. Statisticians are among the best minds in the world. But the profession is declining because many unqualified people are now working as statisticians.”

Earlier in his remarks, the head of the department, Joseph Dagogo, said the department came to appreciate the rector for her outstanding performance in her first year in office, adding that her leadership has brought remarkable changes to the department and the entire institution.

“Under your leadership, the polytechnic has recorded major academic progress, including the accreditation of more ND and HND programmes, improved infrastructure, and better learning conditions,” he said while presenting an award to her.

The Dean of the School of Applied Science, Dr. Nsikak Essien; the Registrar, Mr Idhigu Lucky; and the Polytechnic Librarian, Mr. Ehikioya Uduebor, all took turns to speak glowingly about the leadership style of the Rector.
