Abia State government has addressed last week’s protest by some land owners in the airport city, Nsulu, over the non-payment of compensations.

The villagers had during the protest on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, threatened to reclaim part of the 1,025 hectares of lands in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, which the Abia State government had acquired from them, if compensations were not paid in full.

In a statement on Tuesday, the state government said that payment of compensation to villagers whose lands were outside the airport runway commenced on February 23, 2026.

Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije, who made the Abia State government’s position known, said that farmers and other villagers whose lands sat on the airport runway had previously received full payment of compensation.

He listed the villages as Umuala, Umuomainta, Umuezeukwu, Umuode, Umuosu and Ubaha.

The commissioner said a town hall meeting was held with the community members on February 18, 2026, where they were informed about the final compensation plans.

Chukwumerije said those outside the runway were given time to go through the published list of the compensation beneficiaries and make claims.

The Abia State commissioner for lands reassured the affected villagers that their compensation would be paid in full, promising that any reported corrupt practice involving government staff or community member would be dealt with, in accordance with the law.

He further advised all claimants to document their names at the Ministry of Lands for full compensation.
