Foluwasegun Sanni, a Nigerian Afrobeats artist based in Canada and widely known as Folucious FC, has highlighted the distinct obstacles that African musicians face in the diaspora while trying to establish themselves in the global Afrobeats arena.
In an exclusive interview, the emerging Afrofusion star characterized this experience as a “double struggle”—balancing authenticity to African heritage with the need to adapt to the nuances of a foreign music industry.
“The Afrobeats sound has achieved global recognition, but not every artist in the diaspora receives equal exposure,” Folucious FC stated. “In our home countries, we are sometimes perceived as too foreign, while abroad, people often do not fully understand the origins and richness of the music. It requires a delicate balance that demands consistency and genuine passion.”
The artist, whose musical style combines Afrobeats, hip-hop, and soul, expressed concerns about the lack of live performance opportunities, the high costs of production, and the limited representation of African talents by music labels overseas. Nonetheless, he remains hopeful, emphasizing that digital platforms have created new avenues for visibility and connection.
“Technology has enabled us to connect with fans in Lagos, Accra, London, or Toronto with just a single post. When the music is authentic, it resonates with people everywhere,” he remarked.
Having been raised in Nigeria before moving to Canada, Folucious FC explained that his music captures a blend of the gritty essence of Lagos and the polished sound of North America. His upcoming project, anticipated later this year, will delve deeper into this fusion.
“My journey is about representing every African artist abroad striving to be heard. Although we may be far from home, Afrobeat is ingrained in us. It’s our heartbeat,” he concluded.
