The Adamawa State House of Assembly has sent a delegation to Ganye, a local government area 145 kilometres south of the capital, Yola, after a devastating windstorm that killed a child and lifted roofs off houses and offices.

The fierce storm is believed to be the worst such incident in recent years.

A resident, Abubakar Njidda said of the storm, “Today’s powerful windstorm, which attained frightening speeds in nautical miles, severely impacted the Chief Magistrate Court and the Upper Area Court Ganye, marking the worst storm in more than 50 years.”;

An Ad-hoc Committee of the Adamawa House of Assembly visited the affected communities Wednesday to assess the level of destruction and to sympathize with the victims.

The committee, led by the member representing Mayo Belwa Constituency, Musa Kallamu, Bulus Kantomon of Shelleng Constituency, Emmanuel Kefas of Song Constituency, Kelvin Kefas of Toungo Constituency, and Japheth Hammanjabu of Verre Constituency, inspected several affected areas, including Sugu town and Ganye General Hospital.

Speaking at one of the scenes of destruction, Musa Kallamu emphasized the commitment of the State Assembly to ensure provision of necessary relief materials.

Kallamu who had earlier led his team to the Ganye paramount ruler, the Gangwari Ganye, Alhaji Umaru Adamu, was told that the windstorm occurred on Saturday, April 27, and destroyed several homes, caused massive loss of property and claimed the life of a six-year-old boy.

The committee also visited Sani Usman, the father of the deceased.

In Sugu town, the delegation assessed the damage to residential buildings and interacted with affected families.

At the Ganye General Hospital, the lawmakers were received by the Principal Medical Officer, Dr. Moses Malena, who conducted them to the maternity and outpatient department which were mostly affected.

Speaking after the sympathy tour, Kalamu said his team would deliver a comprehensive report for swift government intervention.
