A magnitude 6.2 earthquake on Wednesday morning struck the Marmara Sea off the coast of Turkey.

This was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey, USGS.

The quake registered a preliminary 6.2 magnitude and struck at a depth of 6.2 miles, as per Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Authority, AFAD.

According to the USGS, the tremor occurred approximately 13 miles off the coast of the coastal town of Marmara EreÄŸlisi.

It is around 67 miles from Istanbul, the country’s commercial capital and largest city.

No damage had been reported so far, although residents of Istanbul said aftershocks continued to shake the city of 16 million.

Turkey’s Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, reported on X that emergency authorities have begun “field assessments”; and offered well wishes to those affected.

AFAD warned people in the region against entering damaged buildings.
