139 motorcycles impounded as Lagos Govt moves against okada riders

The Lagos State Task Force has intensified its enforcement against commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as okada riders, who continue to flout the government’s ban on designated restricted routes.

In a recent operation targeting key areas including Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Abule-Ado, Agric Bus Stop, and Ojo Barracks, the Task Force confiscated no fewer than 139 motorcycles found operating in violation of the directive.

Speaking to journalists, the Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Shola Jejeloye, confirmed the development, stating that the crackdown forms part of the state government’s ongoing initiative to maintain order and enhance public safety on major roads and bridges where okada operations have been outlawed.

“The ban on okada in specific corridors was instituted to safeguard lives and property. We are maintaining a zero-tolerance stance toward violations, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,”; Jejeloye said.

He voiced concern that, despite numerous warnings and public awareness efforts, many commercial motorcyclists continue to flout regulations, posing a serious threat to public safety. He emphasized that all seized motorcycles will be permanently confiscated, and offenders will face legal prosecution.

Reiterating the Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to public safety under the THEMES Plus agenda, Jejeloye called on residents to support the enforcement drive by avoiding the use of okada in restricted zones and reporting violators to the authorities.

“The safety and security of Lagosians remain our top priority. Our patrol and enforcement activities will continue unabated, especially in identified hotspots for illegal okada operations,”; Jejeloye added.
